Sea Hear Now co-headliner appears on PBS special “Bruce Springsteen”

play

Bruce Springsteen fans attending the upcoming Sea Hear Now festival in Asbury Park should pay special attention to co-headliner Noah Kahan.

The Vermont singer-songwriter covers The Boss’s “Atlantic City” in the upcoming “Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska: A Celebration in Words and Music,” a narrated concert performance airing on PBS stations beginning Saturday, August 31, and available now through the PBS Passport service.

Emmylou Harris (“The Price You Pay,” “Nebraska”), Lyle Lovett (“Used Cars,” “My Father’s House”) and The Lumineers (“Mansion on the Hill,” “State Trooper”) also perform in the show, which features songs from Springsteen’s lo-fi 1982 classic “Nebraska.”

The album consists of demos recorded by Springsteen on a Teac 4-track recorder in a farmhouse in Colts Neck. The original plan was to record and release the songs with the E Street Band, but it was decided to leave them as they were.

Eric Church (“Dancing in the Dark”) and Lucinda Williams (“Born in the USA”) also perform. Their songs come from the “Nebraska” follow-up “Born in the USA”.

The performances were filmed on September 9, 2023 at Analog at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville.

Warren Zanes, author of Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, narrates the special.

“I wrote a book about ‘Nebraska’ because the recording has stayed with me for decades,” Zanes said in a statement. “Every time there was trouble in my life, I turned to ‘Nebraska.’ When I started organizing events around the book’s release, I quickly realized that the best of them had music. When I went to Nashville, I had a remarkable cast of musicians to help me tell this story.”

A film version of “Deliver Me from Nowhere” is in the works. Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) will write the screenplay and direct, and Jeremy Allen White, star of “The Bear,” will play Springsteen.

Kahan, whose hits include “Stick Season,” “Northern Attitude,” “Dial Drunk” and “Forever,” is headlining the upcoming Sea Hear Now at the beach in Asbury Park on Saturday, Sept. 14. His performance is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Springsteen and the E Street Band are headlining on Sunday, Sept. 15, playing at 7:30 p.m.

The Gaslight Anthem, Trey Anastasio Band, Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, Revivalists, Kool & The Gang, Hives and more will play the festival’s three stages at North Beach and Bradley Park over the two days.

Tickets are sold out. Prices for Sunday start at $450 on the secondary market. For more information, visit www.seahearnow.com.

In other news, Springsteen paid tribute in concert and online to the late Charles Cross, a music journalist and founder of Springsteen’s journal Backstreets.

“We will miss his great writing, his influence and his help in communicating between our band and our fans,” Springsteen said Aug. 18 from the stage at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh before a performance of “Backstreets.” “This is for Charles Cross.”

Cross, who also wrote biographies of Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix, died on August 9 at the age of 67.
