A GREAT SUCCESS
Boston ended its five-game losing streak on Tuesday — including a doubleheader loss to the Blue Jays — putting the middle-ranking Red Sox club in position to regain some momentum late in the season. Right-hander Brayan Bello continued that effort with a dominant helping hand on the mound.

Bello provided only the bare minimum in terms of run support – Boston scored once, in the first inning – and still managed to limit the Blue Jays to two hits on offense. The 25-year-old outshone Toronto’s Chris Bassitt, who limited the Red Sox to one run in 6 2/3 innings pitched, by carrying Boston and giving the bullpen a breather.

The Blue Jays never once threatened to tie the narrow 1-0 score while Bello was on the field, going 0-of-3 with runners in scoring position and leaving two runners on the basepaths against Boston’s starters.

Outstanding pitching remained the motto for the Red Sox from start to finish, and right-handed closer Kenley Jansen also kept Toronto scoreless with a 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, giving the 36-year-old his 25th save of the season and at the same time securing Boston’s chance of a series win over the Blue Jays on Thursday night.

The Red Sox can get their third straight win before heading out on a six-game road trip to Detroit and New York.

STARS OF THE GAME
— Bello was spectacular from start to finish, giving the Red Sox eight scoreless innings against Toronto. He held the Blue Jays to two hits and struck out eight players. He earned a well-deserved round of applause from the Fenway Park crowd after striking out Toronto’s Ernie Clement to cap the performance.

— Boston slugger Tyler O’Neill provided some last-minute security by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Toronto left-hander Brendon Little. O’Neill made 1 of 4 batters with a perfectly timed swing.

– Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu provided the scoreless RBI in the first inning and finished the night 1-for-4 for Boston.
