“Grateful Dead house” sold for .9 million

Each week, Embarcadero Media takes a look at real estate sales activity along the Midpeninsula in the communities of Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Portola Valley and Woodside. The real estate sales are provided by California Resource, a real estate information company that obtains the information from county land records offices. The information is collected from deeds after escrow closes and is published within four to eight weeks. Here’s a look at real estate sales activity between June 17 and July 12, published the week of August 5.

This week especially interesting … The 106-year-old wood-shingled Palo Alto bungalow where members of the legendary, eclectic rock band Grateful Dead chose their iconic name sold for $2.9 million on July 10. Located in the Professorville neighborhood, the two-bedroom home is considered a significant site in Grateful Dead history. It was on the home’s porch that lead guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia supposedly came up with the group’s name in November 1965. As the story goes, Phil Lesh invited his Warlocks bandmates — Garcia, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann — to the house he was renting at the time to come up with a new name after discovering another band was also called the Warlocks. Garcia was flipping through a dictionary when he happened upon the entry “Grateful Dead” — and the rest is history.
