Brazilian narrowly escapes: The flight he misses crashes and kills all

Adriano said the flight crew who prevented him from boarding saved his life.

By arriving late for boarding, a Brazilian escaped death as the flight he missed ended tragically last night.

Adriano Assis was scheduled to board flight Voepass 2283, which crashed in Sao Paulo, killing all passengers and crew. In an interview with local news channel TV Globo, Adriano said he was prevented from boarding the flight because he was late.

An excerpt from the interview was posted on X with the headline “This man was not allowed to board the plane that just crashed in Vinhedo in Sao Paulo, Brazil, because he was late. He argued with the man at the gate but ended up hugging him after hearing that the plane had crashed. This is unbelievable.”

Adriano said the airline employee who prevented him from boarding saved his life. He said he was late for boarding because of a mix-up in his flight details. When staff refused to let him board the plane, he “argued with him and so on, and that was it. And he saved my life.”

According to the flight manifest, the plane was supposed to carry 58 passengers. The 58th passenger who did not make it on board was Adriano Assis. He added that after learning about the accident, he looked for the airline employee and hugged him.

“I hugged him because he was doing his job. If he hadn’t done his job, I might not be doing this interview today. I spoke out of anger, but this guy – I don’t even know his name – really saved my life,” he said.

Yesterday, several videos went viral on social media showing the Voepass ATR 72 turboprop plane spinning out of control and crashing into a residential complex in Vinhedo, about 80 km northwest of Sao Paulo. All on board – 57 passengers and four crew members – died. No deaths were reported on the ground, according to authorities.
