James Gunn confirms that the Green Lantern TV series will get a series

James Gunn has confirmed that the long-awaited television series Green Lantern has been ordered for a full season.

Deadline reported on Tuesday (June 25) that the series, titled Lanterns, along with the Harry Potter television series and the It prequel Welcome to Derry, will no longer stream exclusively on Max, but will instead air on television on HBO. All three series will also stream on Max.

The cosmic adventure series will be adapted into a live-action film by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark) and acclaimed DC Comics writer Tom King. DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce Lanterns.

The series revolves around new recruit John Stewart, who joins the DC Universe’s cosmic police force known as the Green Lanterns, where he is mentored by veteran hero Hal Jordan. The cast has not yet been announced.

Gunn and Safran said today: “We are thrilled to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a fundamental part of the unified DCU we launch next summer with Superman.”

HBO has ordered an eight-part series. Production details and international release dates will be announced later.

“We are thrilled to be reuniting with Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, who are collaborating with Tom on this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern,” HBO CEO Casey Bloys said Tuesday.

“As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will usher in an exciting new era.”

Gunn and Safran’s rebranded and revamped DCU will officially launch with David Corenswet’s Superman film in 2025 (though they previously confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is the first official character in their universe).

Last year, the duo announced an ambitious film slate featuring heroes such as Supergirl (starring Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon), The Authority, Batman and Swamp Thing, as well as several television shows to complement the film universe.

On the TV front, Lanterns will be joined by the animated series Creature Commandos and the Suicide Squad spinoff Waller, as well as the second season of Peacemaker and a Booster Gold comedy series.
