In the video, Abby, wearing a hoodie, curls up with her knees drawn up and her feet on the seat, with the seatbelt across her ankles rather than her lap.

“Thank you to whoever showed us the seatbelt idea. I tried it and felt very comfortable throughout the flight,” she wrote under her video.

More than 56 million people saw her video and many praised the hack.

But even more are wondering whether it is safe or even advisable.

“This looks extremely uncomfortable,” commented one person.

And someone with a lot of experience on long-haul flights said, “Please don’t do that, it’s not safe. We flight attendants aren’t just making this up, we’re up to date or have experienced many incidents first hand. If we tell you to properly fasten your seatbelt in a tube flying 600 miles per hour, please do so.”

Another person was concerned about the health risks, saying, “All I see is imminent deep vein thrombosis.”

And another flight attendant chimed in and said, “I just want to give everyone here a quick tip for safety and comfort on long-haul flights: If you want to do something like that to prevent your legs from slipping under the seat while you sleep, there is a better alternative.”

The flight attendant explained that you can buy small, airplane-safe inflatables that fit on the floor between your seat and the seat in front of you and basically act as a footrest or extend the seat into a miniature bed.

“I would strongly recommend this, especially in light of recent events involving 20 people seriously injured and one tragic death on a Singapore flight,” the flight attendant said.

“Airplanes can encounter unplanned turbulence at any time, and severe turbulence is incredibly frightening and can occur at any time.

“If you put your seatbelt on like this (like in the video), you can hurt yourself and others. Often there is little warning before it hits you and you need to buckle up!

“You may be lucky and never encounter turbulence in your entire flying life, but I have experienced quite a bit of turbulence in my career.”
