After the discovery of bombs from the Second World War, an evacuation order was issued for over 400 houses

More than 400 homes were evacuated on August 18, 2024, following the discovery of a bomb believed to be from World War II in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. The bomb, which is historical munitions, was unearthed in the Rivenwood housing estate about nine miles east of Belfast.

Local authorities said the operation to safely remove the bomb could take five days. Police issued evacuation orders and erected barricades around the site. Superintendent Johnston McDowell of the North Down and Ards District Council thanked local residents for their patience during this disruptive but necessary operation.
