Air India offers wireless in-flight entertainment on long-haul flights

Air India has introduced wireless in-flight entertainment system for passengers travelling to Australia, Canada, Europe and the USA.

The service will be available on older Boeing 777 and 787 wide-body aircraft that do not have a functioning in-flight entertainment system in the seatback.

“We continually strive to anticipate and meet the evolving needs of our modern travelers,” said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India.

Digital service provider Blue Box will offer this service and customers would be able to access film and music content streamed to their personal devices.

Air India has more than 40 older Boeing aircraft that are scheduled to undergo a $400 million retrofit project starting in mid-2024. Plans include new seats and in-flight entertainment systems, among other things. However, the project has been held up due to delays in approvals and a backlog of orders from seat manufacturers.

The airline has faced criticism for its product on long-haul flights, with the in-flight entertainment system not working and the seats being worn and shabby, so wireless streaming could serve as a stopgap solution until Air India has a renewed fleet.
