AMD had another great quarter in Q2 2024 as it gained market share in the data center and laptop CPU markets, according to a new report from CPU market watcher Mercury Research. Still, Intel was able to gain market share in desktops and continues to lead in terms of unit shipments in general.
Intel continued to dominate the client PC market in Q2 2024, securing a 78.9% market share while AMD held 21.1%. This result is to be expected given the strength and diversity of Intel’s client product lineup. Nevertheless, AMD managed to increase its market share by 0.5% sequentially and 3.8% year-over-year. Despite AMD’s continued success, it will likely take the company years to achieve the revenue growth needed to completely shift the market in its favor, not only because Intel dominates corporate PC sales, but also because Intel has access to enormous manufacturing capacity.

AMD lost 1% market share to Intel in desktop PCs in Q2 2024 and now controls 23%, leaving 77% with Intel. Considering that AMD was preparing to release its brand new Zen 5-based CPUs for desktops in August, we doubt that the company was too aggressive in crowding the channel with its previous-generation Zen 4-based offerings, which could be one of the reasons why the company lost a small portion of the market to its competitor. On the other hand, compared to Q2 2023, AMD gained 3.6% market share in Q2 2024, which is quite a good result.

In laptops, AMD saw gains both sequentially and year-over-year. The company had 20.3% of x86 processors for laptops in the second quarter of 2024, up 1% from the first quarter of this year and 3.8% from the same quarter last year.
Apparently, even the upcoming launch of Zen 5-based Ryzen AI and Copilot+ and the AI PC hype will not reduce demand for AMD’s existing notebook products, which is why PC makers have accelerated purchases of these products. Another reason for AMD’s success could be Intel’s problems in supplying enough Meteor Lake PCs.
Still, AMD doesn’t seem to have sold many expensive (though expensive doesn’t mean high-end) Ryzen CPUs. Its laptop CPU revenue share is 17.7%, well below its market share of 20.3%. Here, too, AMD’s position has improved, as the company was able to increase its revenue share by 2.8% compared to the second quarter of this year and by a quite respectable 4.5% compared to the second quarter of 2023.

AMD’s biggest success in the second quarter may be in the server space. The company managed to take another 0.5% market share from Intel and now controls 24.1% of the data center CPU market with its EPYC CPUs. Compared to the second quarter of 2024, AMD’s gain looks even more impressive, as the company took 5.6% from Intel.
Although Intel is the undisputed market leader in terms of volume, still controlling around 75.9% of data center CPU shipments in Q2, it is important to remember that, as shown by the two companies’ Q2 2024 financial results, AMD appears to be the leader in top-end, high-end CPUs that require the most powerful and expensive processors. While Intel earned $3.0 billion from selling 75.9% of data center CPUs (in units), AMD earned $2.8 billion from selling 24.1% of server CPUs (in units), suggesting that the average selling price of an AMD EPYC is considerably higher than the ASP of an Intel Xeon.
In fact, AMD’s revenue share of the server market in Q2 2024 was 33.7%, as calculated by AMD itself based on data from Mercury Research. That’s an increase of 0.7% QoQ and 6.6% YoY, an impressive result. On the other hand, Intel currently has nothing to counter AMD’s 96-core and 128-core processors, so AMD controls the high-end server market.
