Anthony Santander and Jackson Holliday help the Orioles to a 7-3 victory over the Blue Jays

Anthony Santander hit a two-run homer before the first out of the game, but the Orioles waited six innings before scoring another run. Jackson Holliday woke everyone up with a homer to take the lead in the seventh inning, and Santander hit a home run from the other side of the plate in the eighth inning.

Trevor Rogers got off to a good start, Brandon Hyde was thrown out and Coby Mayo continued to struggle defensively, but Holliday and Santander were the main things tonight. The Orioles came back from a deficit and the bullpen did its job in a 7-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

Colton Cowser delivered a hit worthy of a leadoff spot, starting the game with a nine-pitch walk. Santander, batting from left, fell behind 1-2 before grabbing a high fastball. The switch-hitter slammed the ball 391 feet into right-center field for his 33rd home run of the season.

The next three batters went down in order, but Santander gave Trevor Rogers a two-run lead.

Rogers struggled in his first start with the Orioles, but he improved tonight, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks. Baltimore will expect that kind of performance from its fifth starter, but the Orioles need Rogers to make an impact with Grayson Rodriguez on the injured list.

Rogers retired George Springer early in the first inning before allowing two singles with one out. The left-hander nearly made an inning-ending double play, but a sharp grounder by Alejandro Kirk landed hard at third base. Coby Mayo failed to field the ball, and all three runners reached base safely.

To his credit, Rogers limited the damage. He allowed the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly to left, but he did knock Davis Schneider out of action to end the inning. Mayo was initially given an error before the official scorer changed the call to a base hit. Either way, Rogers needed 31 pitchers to get the first three outs.

In the second inning, the Jays went back to work against Rogers and Baltimore’s defense. Leo Jiménez hit a double to left, and Brian Serven lifted the ball just over Jackson Holliday’s glove at second base for an RBI single. Serven got to second base with a ground out, and Rogers nearly escaped with another grounder to third.

Mayo fielded a sharp hit ball by Ernie Clement, but failed to hit Ryan Mountcastle at first base. Mayo committed his first official error of the game and Serven scored Toronto’s third run of the game.

The Orioles led by two before they even got an out, but the batters quickly fell asleep. Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis kept Baltimore off balance with several high fastballs, and the O’s couldn’t score again until the seventh inning.

Eloy Jiménez hit an infield single on a check swing and reached second base on a throwing error by Vlad Guerrero Jr. Jiménez reached third base after a failed pickoff attempt and Jackson Holliday needed only a fly ball to tie the game at 3-3.

Holliday fell behind 2-0 before completely destroying a high fastball. Holliday pulled the ball 424 feet, giving Baltimore a 4-3 lead. The hit was his fourth career home run and Holliday became the first 20-year-old rookie to hit a home run in three consecutive games.

Burch Smith worked a clean sixth inning and Yennier Cano delivered a seventh-inning shutdown with a dash of drama. Cano allowed a one-out single to Springer and the former All-Star reached second base when Clement hit a groundout to the pitcher.

The Orioles decided to pitch to Guerrero with first base open and two outs. Guerrero hit a sinker on the first pitch, but Santander spectacularly caught the ball while diving and robbed Guerrero of the ball at the right outfield wall.

Santander opened the eighth and capped off his special night, hitting from the right side and sending an 0-2 changeup over the wall for his second home run of the night.

The hit gave Baltimore some security and marked a career-high 34 home runs for the soon-to-be free agent. Maybe the Orioles should pay the man!?

Austin Slater drew another pinch-hit walk and Rutschman picked up his base after being hit by a pitch. Jiménez continued his good start in Baltimore with a two-run double down the right field line.

Cionel Pérez retired the team in the eighth inning and Seranthony Domínguez left the Jays behind with a scoreless ninth inning.

Hyde was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing over balls and strikes. Home plate umpire Larry Vanover had problems behind the plate and both teams expressed frustration early in the game.

Mayo missed his first hit, but hit a ball sharply to shortstop after Holliday’s home run. Ramón Urías replaced Mayo at third base after the Orioles took the lead.

The Orioles can win the series tomorrow when Dean Kremer faces Kevin Gausman. The Yankees have a doubleheader against the Angels today.
