The pro-Palestinian “undecided” movement has come to a standstill with leading Democrats as the DNC begins
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Supporters of the “undecided” protest movement, which grew out of dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas, could play a major role at the Democratic National Convention. Loud protests are expected outside and possibly inside the Chicago venue. Kamala Harris and her campaign team have spent weeks meeting with people involved in the movement in hopes of easing tensions. The meetings included a previously unreported meeting between Harris and the mayor of Dearborn, Mich. Many of the leaders of the “undecided” movement have expressed cautious optimism about Harris’ campaign. But they claim she and the campaign team have fallen short of their demands ahead of the convention. The demands include several speaking engagements for members of the movement.
An Israeli airstrike kills 18 members of a family in the Gaza Strip as mediators hope for a ceasefire
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed at least 18 people, all from the same family. The attack Saturday came hours after U.S., Egyptian and Qatari officials concluded two days of ceasefire talks and expressed confidence that an agreement can be reached. They expect to work out implementation details in Cairo next week. Health officials say the Palestinian death toll in the 10-month war between Israel and Hamas has exceeded 40,000. The fighting has devastated Gaza, where one case of polio has been confirmed, a quarter century after the disease was eradicated there.
Trump is ready to mobilize Pennsylvania voters near Biden’s hometown of Scranton and counter Harris’ surge
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump is expected to rally his supporters in northeastern Pennsylvania at an event Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, a part of the battleground state where Trump hopes conservative, white, working-class voters near President Joe Biden’s hometown will boost the Republican’s chances of retaking the White House. In previous visits to the nation’s second-largest natural gas state, Trump has cited his Democratic rival Kamala Harris’s past opposition to fracking, a process used to extract oil and gas. Her campaign has tried to soften her stance, saying she would not ban fracking, even though that was her position when she sought the 2020 presidential nomination.
Tim Walz returns to his home state where an important vote in Nebraska is at stake
OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — Thousands of Nebraskans are supporting native Tim Walz on his first trip to his home state since becoming the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Supporters hope Walz’s rural roots can help Democrats appeal to swathes of Republican strongholds where they have been barely competitive in recent elections. But his appearance in Omaha on Saturday also reinforces the campaign’s interest in securing an electoral vote that comes with victory in the swing congressional district that went to Joe Biden in 2020 and Barack Obama in 2008. Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance will come to Omaha next week for a private fundraiser.
Former Rep. George Santos expected to plead guilty to multiple counts in fraud case, AP source says
Former U.S. Rep. George Santos is expected to plead guilty to several counts in his federal fraud trial, according to a person familiar with the matter. Santos, a New York Republican, is expected to give his guilty plea at a court hearing scheduled for Monday on Long Island, the person said. The person could not publicly discuss details of the confession and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The court hearing was set for Monday afternoon after prosecutors and Santos’ lawyers jointly requested one on Friday. They also requested and received a postponement of certain pre-trial deadlines. The news comes just weeks before jury selection was set to begin on Sept. 9.
Hurricane Ernesto is downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves through Bermuda
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The National Hurricane Center in Bermuda said Ernesto, which made landfall early Saturday on the small British Atlantic territory, has been downgraded to a tropical storm. The hurricane brought heavy rains and strong winds that forced residents to stay in their homes. More than 26,000 people are still without power, authorities said. The Bermuda government said tropical storm-force winds and hurricane-force gusts will continue through Saturday afternoon and gale-force winds well into Sunday.
Immigrants prepare with excitement and concern for Biden’s new protection measures
MIAMI (AP) — A new Biden administration program will allow some spouses of U.S. citizens living in the U.S. illegally to gain legal status without leaving the country. As many as 500,000 people in the country without permanent residency status who are married to U.S. citizens could qualify for the program, which launches Monday. News of the program sparked a flurry of activity nationwide as couples sought verification to see if they were eligible. Immigrant groups are trying to help people understand the policy and combat misinformation. But the excitement is tempered by concerns about whether the program will face legal challenges and what happens if Donald Trump, who has vowed to deport millions of immigrants living in the country illegally, becomes president.
The strategist who ran DeSantis’ ill-fated candidacy is working with Musk to organize voters for Trump
Donald Trump’s campaign largely leaves paid door-to-door canvassing and voter mobilization to outside groups like America PAC, which is partly funded by Elon Musk. Musk has tapped veterans of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ failed presidential bid to run the group. DeSantis’ old campaign manager, Generra Peck, has close ties to Musk, according to people familiar with the matter. She is said to have overruled internal objections to DeSantis’s campaign launch by holding a conversation with Musk on the platform, then called Twitter. The platform crashed repeatedly, spoiling the launch of his campaign. The experience underscores the risks of Trump’s campaign outsourcing a core function to a clique of untested groups operating independently.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Anger over the Indian government’s failure to stop rising violence against women has sparked protests by medical professionals and women’s groups in several Indian cities after a student doctor was raped and killed last week. A volunteer police officer working at the hospital was arrested in connection with the crime. The protests — led mostly by women — are demanding a safer work environment.
