Armored No. 1 Rating

There is a reliable need for horror stories for tweens and teens, but unfortunately there are not enough authors to meet this demand. My daughters regularly pick up Goose flesh books I read in middle school, and I find myself drawn to any frightening material that is appropriate for readers their age. Fortunately, I can add Armored to their reading list as this first issue is beautifully drawn and engagingly written to appeal to readers of all ages looking for some horror adventure in their reading routine.

Written by screenwriter Michael Schwartz (who largely influenced RL Stines Zombie City) and expertly drawn by Ismael Hernandez, 13-year-old Andy is placed in care with the Collins family, who are still grieving the loss of their son. Thanks to his detective nature, Andy quickly becomes curious about the mysterious circumstances surrounding their son’s death, particularly as it relates to a nearby castle. His curiosity leads him to discover a coat of arms reminiscent of medieval armor and the ghost of Sir William. Together, they begin to navigate their new partnership, just as a dark force threatens to destroy their lives, setting the stage for adventures to come.

Armored #1 is a focused and enjoyable first issue that provides a well-paced entry into this series. Andy is personable and approachable, and the script doesn’t overwhelm the reader with unnecessary explanations. The images are allowed to tell the story with some exceptional panel blocks from Hernandez. The watercolor technique used throughout the issue sets this book apart from its competitors and makes for a mandatory second reading.

Issue No. 2 has just been published. ArmoredThe first issue of will hopefully appeal to fans of character-driven horror adventures. Schwartz and Hernandez are a creative team to be reckoned with, with many more exciting adventures to come.
