AWOL hosts open water diving courses at Blue Lakes Country Club

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — This weekend, AWOL Adventure Sports is finishing up its open water diving courses at Blue Lakes Country Club, something it has never done before. AWOL usually finishes its diving courses in Boise, but this month the country club was happy to allow divers to finish their courses on its private property.

AWOL’s Open Water Scuba course is the first step toward becoming a certified diver. Classes are held monthly. With the help of a certified instructor, students learn diving theory, basic skills, and complete four open water dives.

According to AWOL, the course is designed to give students a solid foundation in recreational diving and the confidence to explore the underwater world.

“72 percent of this planet is covered by water, so can you really say you’ve seen this planet if you haven’t been underwater? If not, definitely give us a call and we’ll be happy to show you,” said Ryan Parker.

Ryan Parker is a certified scuba instructor and has been diving with AWOL for about five years. On Saturday, AWOL took about 10 student divers to their first open water diving course at Blue Lakes. They had to do two dives and demonstrate the skills they learned in a pool at the beginning of the course.

Students must complete two more open water dives on Sunday before receiving certification.

“Try it. If you think it’s something you’re interested in, then it’s probably for you, so definitely give it a try,” Parker said. “If you don’t want to spend that much money because you’re not sure, we can offer a customized try scuba program where we’ll take you out and show you the absolute basics. It won’t give you a certificate, but it will give you a pretty good idea of whether it’s something you’d enjoy.”
