Berea receives 9,000 to improve wastewater infrastructure

BEREA, Ohio – The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has awarded Berea $729,284 to improve its sewer system.

The funding is part of the 2025 Member Community Infrastructure Program (MCIP).

The grant will cover design and construction costs for improvements along Jacqueline Drive, Meadow Drive, Sprague Road and “a handful of side streets,” according to Public Works Director and City Engineer Tony Armagno.

He noted that any construction work would take place in 2025.

“We had some concerns about flooding, but nothing too serious,” Armagno explained in an interview.

“The wastewater district has also identified this area as an area of I&I (inflow and infiltration) seepage, which is stormwater entering the sewer system.

“We also have a pumping station that was built on Fair Street years ago to help with flooding, and with the improvements we have made on Fair Street, we have been able to greatly reduce the flooding there.

“We now want to see if we can eliminate this pumping station.”

This decision will be made after flow monitoring, sewer pipe monitoring and engineering tests are completed.

“We are not 100 percent sure that we can remove the pumping station, but we believe that we may be able to do so after we line the sewers,” Armagno said.

“We’ll make some improvements, test again and then see what we can do.”
