The Celestine, New Orleans

Open

New Orleans is known for its boutique and luxury hotels. Seriously, for such a laid-back city, extravagance is done suspiciously well. From the Hotel Mazarin to the Hotel Saint Vincent, you’re spoiled for choice in the Big Easy.

The Celestine is the latest hotel to add to Nola’s portfolio of opulence, with a prime French Quarter location and star power—playwright Tennessee Williams wrote Endstation longing.

The interior is a cool expression of the city’s African, French, Spanish and Caribbean influences. It is chic and unconventional at the same time, walking the line between strict and cheeky.

And since there are only ten rooms on the property, you’ll feel like part of a hidden community, shielded from the madness of the French Quarter.

Thompson Hotel, Palm Springs

Opening soon

This Hyatt project is scheduled to open its doors in late 2024.

The Palm Springs location exudes pure Southern California magic, offering mountain views, mid-century modern design, and a sunshine-first aesthetic. (Lots of windows and balcony space.)

One of its more unique offerings is its on-site wine tasting room called HALL Napa Valley. In all the Palm Springs stays I’ve visited, I’ve never seen a wine tasting room on-site.

There is also a rooftop pool with numerous cabanas, which adds even more unexpectedness.

In terms of amenities, the Thompson Hotel offers all the basic amenities a discerning traveler is looking for. However, due to its affiliation with Hyatt, there are also amenities such as conference rooms and meeting areas – which are not necessarily the most attractive of luxury amenities.

Casa Loma Beach Hotel, Laguna Beach

Open

Want an oceanfront experience in Laguna Beach? Look no further.

Casa Loma offers visitors direct access to the beach – and to Laguna Beach’s best art galleries and shopping districts. Seriously, if location is important to you for an unforgettable stay, this hotel is not to be missed.

Aside from the great zip code, Casa Loma offers a private balcony overlooking the beach (it’s like having a VIP ticket to sunsets) and a meticulously maintained bungalow atmosphere.

Or, if you want to spend more time by the pool, get a room with direct access.

I’m also a fan of Casa Loma’s approach to accessibility. It’s one of the few new luxury hotel openings that offers guests a fully accessible stay.

The Global Ambassador, Phoenix

Open

I mentioned The Global Ambassador in my article about the 10 best boutique hotels in the USA. That’s because it has a real vibe – one that harks back to the days of chic speakeasies.

Although it looks like a parking lot from the outside, the interior is a masterpiece of fine design.

In addition to its excellent facilities, the Global Ambassador also offers four spacious and themed dining rooms. Guests can choose between three restaurants and a separate lobby bar. Don’t be fooled by the term Lobby Bar put you off – it’s another one of those flashy Mad Men-style places.

Set in a rural setting, The Scribner’s Lodge offers a balcony with pool views.

The Rounds, Catskills

Open

Welcome to a new addition to Scribner’s Lodge in the Catskills: The Rounds. The Rounds refers to the property’s freestanding cabin structures. They’re dodecahedrons, in case you’re interested in geometric architecture…but you’ll probably be more focused on the interior.

The aim is to provide an opulent yet secluded sanctuary.

Each private cabin has Japanese cedar soaking tubs and skylights for stargazing, but guests also have access to the main lodge, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge – an old 1960s building that was renovated in 2017.

That makes The Rounds an even more luxurious experience within what’s considered a posh Catskill lodge. And while you might be picturing an elevated cabin, don’t forget that they’re officially dodecahedrons—that is, they’re twelve-sided and unlike anything you’ve seen before.

The Georgian, Los Angeles

Open

Just like the Global Ambassador, The Georgian also made my list of the best boutique design hotels in the USA. This LA location has a more Art Deco focus and is a perfect love letter to the city.

Seriously – it seeps Style. Even the bellboys are perfectly dressed.

There are other amenities worth writing home about. Room service is a big deal and can be ordered at the touch of a button. Oh, and record players. Each room has its own player and a few records to choose from.

The Dunlin on the Kiawah River, Charleston

Open

Just twenty miles north of Charleston, you’ll find a stunning new development on the Kiawah River. Be enchanted by the magic of Dunlin, which offers you all the private wonders of nearby Kiawah Island without ever leaving the mainland.

You will also experience the American atmosphere of Charleston and the nearby Sea Islands.

There are wicker rocking chairs, porches for chatting and sipping sweet tea, and all the Southern amenities you could want within easy reach. I’m talking delicious barbecues, fishing trips, and even dolphin watching.

I also like that the hotel has carefully designed walking trails that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the wetlands and watch birds while relaxing and strolling around.

The lesson here? Just because it’s luxurious doesn’t mean it’s snooty.
