BEST OF THE BEST series (and it sounds like a perfect basis for a film)

The DC Universe is full of badass characters who are highly skilled fighters, but this November, Black Canary will try to prove herself as the best of them in a new six-issue limited series.

Titled Black Canary: The Best of the Bestwe continue with Dinah Laurel Lance as she faces Lady Shiva. To train for this fight, the heroine is to be trained by the likes of Batman, Wildcat and her mother, the first Black Canary.

Tom Koenig (Mr. Miracle, Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow) and artist Ryan Sook (X-Factor, Challenger of the Unknown) take on the comic and we’re sure you’ll agree that it sounds like it would make a great movie. Given King’s involvement in the DCU – he’s currently working on HBO’s Lanterns – we cannot rule out the possibility that this will happen at some point.

King’s work proved to be extremely adaptable, with a Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow Film in progress at DC Studios and its vision Series is likely to have a major impact on Marvel Studios Vision Quest television series.

This is what you can expect from Black Canary: The Best of the Best #1:

Black Canary faces off against Lady Shiva, her toughest opponent yet, in a battle to determine who is the best hand-to-hand combatant in the DC Universe. To make it to the final round, Black Canary will have to use all of her martial arts skills and abilities, plus receive training from some of DC’s most accomplished fighters, including Batman, Wildcat, and even her mother, the original Black Canary!

“I’ve wanted to tell this story for a few years now and I’m really excited to see what Ryan and I will show fans for Dinah,” King said in a press release today. “He has the perfect art style for this series and fans will feel every punch and kick from the first issue to the finale.”

Black Canary: The Best of the Best #1 will feature a main cover by series artist Ryan Sook, as well as variants by David Nakayama, Chrissie Zullo, and Dan Hipp. We also get a wraparound cover by Otto Schmidt, featuring various versions of Black Canary from across the DC Universe, including her animated and live-action versions.

Believe it or not, this is only Black Canary’s fifth solo series; the previous volumes appeared in 1991, 1992, 2007, and 2014.

Black Canary: The Best of the Best will be released by DC Comics on November 27th. You can check out some cover art below.
