BEST OF THE BEST writer Tom King talks about being inspired by the WWE and why it makes you “cheer like hell”

There are plenty of tough hand-to-hand combatants in the DC Universe, but later this year, Black Canary will prove she’s the best in her field in a new six-issue limited series.

Titled Black Canary: The Best of the BestDinah Laurel Lance will prove that she is no longer the second best fighter in the DC Universe when she faces Lady Shiva. To prepare for this fight, the heroine will be trained by Batman, Wildcat and her mother, the first Black Canary.

Tom Koenig (Mr. Miracle, Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow) and artist Ryan Sook (X-Factor) take on a comic that has all the makings of a great film. Given his involvement in the DCU – he is currently working on HBO’s Lanterns – we cannot rule out the possibility that this will happen at some point.

King’s work proved to be extremely adaptable, with a Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow Film in progress at DC Studios and its vision Series is likely to have a major impact on Marvel Studios vision television series.

Newsarama recently caught up with King and he revealed how WWE inspired his approach. Black Canary: The Best of the Best.

“(My) oldest son became a huge WWE fan. He wasn’t exactly a nerd when I was growing up, but he was totally into it, just like I was fascinated by comic books as a kid.” explained the author. “And when I remembered that my parents didn’t like my comics at all and didn’t participate in my hobby, I actually wanted to do the opposite.”

“So I decided to watch WWE with him, read the books and buy the toys, and I was very taken with it. I was fascinated by how they only had four corners of a ring to tell 80 years of storytelling,” he continued. “The challenge of it just blows me away, that they make it so compelling. And every author sees something they like and wants to be a part of it.”

When asked how the crazy world of professional wrestling found its way into the comic book series, King added: “As far as the commentators and the dialogue and stuff, I sat down and spent 10,000 hours watching Raw and SmackDown and a lot of WWE pay-per-views, memorizing all of that and just hearing those two voices in my head.”

You don’t have to be a wrestling fan to have fun Black Canary: The Best of the Best (If so, go to TheRingReport.com now!) and King later clarified that this comic was basically his favorite type of superhero story.

“I’ve said this many times, but I’ll say it again. My favorite thing about comics is when a superhero is pushed as hard as they can, but then gets up and keeps fighting, because that inspires me in my own life.”

“I’ve been using these comics since I was eight years old to say, OK, you know, I got bullied today. I’m going to get back up and keep fighting because Superman got the fuck up off the mat. And this comic is obviously about a fight. And I think the best part about any WWE fight, any boxing match, is the moment when your opponent thinks, he’s gone. That’s just impossible. But they get up off the mat and say, no, it’s not over. You know, it’s not over. It’s not over.”

“And if you don’t think I’m going to put that in this comic, then you don’t know me as a writer. That’s coming and you’re going to fucking cheer, and I’m going to cheer when it happens, it’s awesome.”
