Bicycles have been added to the Thomasville Middle School library and are causing excitement among students

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) – Thomasville Middle School students are starting the new school year with a renewed enthusiasm for reading.

Students can come to the Macintyre Park Middle School library, borrow a book, hop on a bike and read. They can set the pace of the bike.

Brooklyn Nixxon, a student at MacIntyre Park Middle School, said she was excited about the new addition to the library.

“It helps me to read more because it’s like I’m exercising and I’m exercising my brain because I’m reading a nice book,” she said.

More news from South Georgia:

The school’s media specialist, Julie Brewster, said she presented the idea to her principal because she wanted to get students more excited about reading while also encouraging them to come to the media center more often.

“It’s more fun for the kids knowing they can come and use the bikes for rewards and different things. And maybe we can use the bikes for the kids who just need to refocus or maybe need a little time out,” Brewster said.

She said the bikes also promoted healthy lifestyles among students while improving their literacy skills.

Destiny Williams, a student at MacIntyre Park Middle School, said she has been encouraged to go to the library since the bikes were introduced and finds reading while riding a bike is fun.

“I used to not be very keen on reading and going to the library, but now I really enjoy reading and come to the library more often,” Williams said.
