Black Lives Matter UK accuses far-right figures of amplifying recent attacks on people of colour

UNITED KINGDOM – A statement from Black Lives Matter UK (#BlackLivesMatterUK on X) took to Twitter/X this week to address the organised attacks on people of colour that have taken place recently in the UK, claiming that these are being exacerbated by far-right figures such as Nigel Farage, a member of the British Parliament.

The statement cites numerous examples of racist violence in communities, including physical violence such as stabbings, beatings and arson of homes and hotels.

Farage has suggested that recent violence was partly due to “soft policing” during Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests.

However, BLM complained that a study by Netpol of the 2020 BLM protests showed that excessive force was used in the BLM protests compared to similar protests during the lockdown and that the idea of soft policing was an invention spread by Nigel.

“Policing and more power are not the answer,” BLM accused.

BLM’s Twitter/X statement argues that many far-right figures are contributing to the rise of fascism in Britain by spreading misinformation and exacerbating inequalities for their own benefit.

The statement said that actions of resistance across the UK have helped to connect and protect communities during these organised attacks. Furthermore, through these actions of resistance, organising together will help defend and defeat fascism.

“Our movement is about defending and protecting life, not destroying it,” the BLM statement emphasizes.
