Blackadder creator Richard Curtis confirms return of cult series for Comic Relief

Blackadder creator Richard Curtis has confirmed that the show will return for Comic Relief.

The iconic BBC sitcom returns for a charity special, with Tony Robinson reprising the role of Baldrick, the servant to Rowan Atkinson’s character Edmund Blackadder.

Speaking to Gary Davies on BBC Radio 2, Richard said: “For the first time in 20 years, Baldrick will be making some kind of appearance.

“We are making plans for that now and I think there will be something great beet-based with Tony Robinson back in action. I’m looking forward to it.”

But Rowan will not return for the special.

When asked if the actor would be taking part in the Comic Relief special, Richard replied: “No (laughs). Rowan is far too serious to do something like that.”

Blackadder originally ran for four seasons and two specials from 1983 to 1989, and another special, Blackadder: Back and Forth, aired in 1999.

Each season of Blackadder covered a different period of history, including the Middle Ages, Elizabethan England, the Georgian era and a number of episodes focused on the trenches during the First World War.

Ben Elton co-wrote the second, third and fourth seasons with Richard, but admitted last year that he had no “appetite” for further seasons of the series.

When asked if he could work with Richard again for a new series, he said: “We were a great team and I’ve talked so often about doing something different. Not ‘Blackadder’ again, I don’t think any of us are up for that.”

In 2018, Tony admitted that he could imagine a return of “some version” of the program.

He said at the time: “I can certainly imagine a version of the series coming back. There are a lot of other eras in history that could be used to make a six-part Blackadder series. We would have to get the old group back together.”

“I know everyone is busy doing wonderful things, but we all have great memories, so I’m sure we’ll get through it.”
