Blue Bunny introduces new translucent product packaging – here’s what was behind the decision

Blue Bunny fans will be storming local supermarkets to get their hands on the brand’s latest treat: the swirled frozen dessert in sustainable packaging.

Parent company Wells Enterprises announced the news with a surprising twist: As Packaging World reported, the recyclable pint is translucent.

The seven soft serve flavors, called Twist Cones, are Chocolate Vanilla, Cookies and Cream, Strawberry and Cream, Mint Chocolate, Cherry Chocolate, Chocolate Bar and Blu’s Birthday Cake.

According to Packaging World, Berry Global developed the “widely recyclable” polypropylene container with a high-density polyethylene lid. The products are already available in Walmart, Kroger, Food Lion, Albertsons, Safeway and Publix stores across the United States.

Although plastic is not recyclable everywhere and sometimes ends up in incinerators, landfills or the environment, the alternative is to use plastic-coated paper, which is not recyclable.

The pints can also be nested inside each other, “minimizing wasted space during transportation,” which “helps optimize supply chain efficiency and reduce the need for truckloads,” according to a press release.

Innovations like these are necessary to free the global economy from the dirty energy spiral. Our consumption of coal and petroleum used to make plastics drives up global temperatures by releasing toxic gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Air pollution is blanketing the planet, leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.

These incidents can be deadly in themselves, but the warming of our planet is also causing health problems for people. Children and older adults, as well as people with respiratory problems and other chronic conditions, are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. The number of illnesses is also increasing as ticks, mosquitoes and other creatures expand their range and come into contact with more people.

You can take steps to ensure a safer future, such as switching from an internal combustion engine vehicle to an electric vehicle and investing in clean energy through community solar or rooftop panels.

“Now more than ever, access to innovative, recyclable packaging is critical to our customers as they strive to meet evolving sustainability demands,” said Matt Chase, Berry Global Director of Sales – National Accounts. “Through strong value-added partnerships like this, we are more effectively developing products to promote cleaner communities for future generations without compromising on usability or shelf appeal.”
