Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN launches statewide “Food as Medicine” initiative

What you should know:

– FarmboxRx, a pioneer in food-as-medicine solutions, announced a new partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee (BCBST) to combat food insecurity and improve the health of Tennesseans.

– Through this collaboration, BCBST members receive fresh produce and disease-specific health education delivered directly to their homes.

Combating food insecurity and health inequalities

Tennessee faces significant challenges related to food insecurity, with one in seven residents struggling to access healthy food. This partnership aims to address these issues by providing BCBST members with the essential resources to improve their nutrition and overall health.

By combining fresh produce deliveries and health education, FarmboxRx and BCBST are working to reduce health disparities and promote preventative healthcare. The program focuses on reaching vulnerable populations, including people in urban areas who often struggle to access nutritious food.

“To reduce health disparities, we must first address the social determinants of health in these communities,” said Ashley Tyrner, founder and CEO of FarmboxRx. “Food insecurity is a multidimensional issue – and it’s not always just about having access to food. Given the unique challenges each community faces, it’s critical that we assess state-specific barriers to nutrition and the health issues that result from them. Our health system partners understand this, and I’m grateful for their commitment to our shared mission.”

A comprehensive approach to your well-being

FarmboxRx’s unique model goes beyond providing food by including health literacy materials with each delivery. This approach empowers members to make informed decisions about their health and take an active role in managing chronic conditions.

Extending the impact to the whole country

This partnership is another milestone for FarmboxRx, which has already delivered millions of pounds of fresh produce to members across the country. The company has partnered with over 90 health insurance companies, demonstrating the growing recognition of food as an important component of overall health and wellness.
