With a month and a half left before the end of the regular season, there are so many interesting and exciting races in Major League Baseball. Everything seems to be in the balance as the teams at the top of the sport and in the second tier are close together and few playoff spots seem secure. Then there are the games on the schedule where teams play to the finish and turn to less established pitchers to audition for either a spot on the 2025 roster or offseason market value. This Monday game between the Blue Jays and Angels is a perfect example of a tryout for the pitchers involved, so let’s talk about those pitchers below:

Expected starters for the Blue Jays-Angels

Francis of Bowden Comparisons Davis Daniel

Francis of Bowden (4-3) has a 5.44 ERA. He has played much of this season out of the bullpen but was recently reinstated into the starting lineup. Francis has made two starts in the last two weeks against the powerful Baltimore Orioles. He wobbled slightly in each game against the O’s but has survived and not been overwhelmed. He has held up well and shown great competitive toughness. The Blue Jays must have liked how Francis battled through and fought hard when the Orioles pressured him. They were unable to get a big inning against him and forced him out of the game early. These are encouraging building blocks for Francis, who has not played a major role on the Blue Jays’ staff but has a chance to earn a spot on the 2025 roster if he continues to show the ability to pitch his way out of trouble and not let difficult situations roll to his detriment.

Last start: Wednesday, August 7 against the Baltimore Orioles: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 7 K

2024 Road Splits: 4 starts, 29 IP, 30 H, 20 R, 8 HR, 11 BB, 26 K

Davis Daniel (1-3) has a 6.04 ERA. He hasn’t started many games this season, so his numbers reflect a small sample size. What really jumps out at Daniel’s numbers is how different he is at home versus on the road. He got shredded by the Yankees at Yankee Stadium last week, but he’s a different man at home. In 16-plus innings at home this year, Daniel has allowed one home run and one walk. He hasn’t dominated, but the lack of gopher balls and walks provides a good foundation for any pitcher trying to establish himself at the major league level. While he’s allowing a lot of hits, if Daniel continues to give up home runs and walks at home, he can build a track record and some confidence that could allow him to eventually translate his home field form to away games. Daniel could become a solid major league pitcher over time. Over the next month and a half, Daniel has the chance to impress the Angel leadership and prove to his teammates his suitability for the 2025 squad.

Last start: Wednesday, August 7 against the New York Yankees: 3 1/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 HR, 2 BB, 4 K

2024 Home Splits: 3 starts, 16 2/3 IP, 17 H, 8 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 16 K

Why the Blue Jays could cover/win the spread

The Jays just played two terrible baseball games against the Oakland A’s. They will have a hard time playing a third terrible game in a row. They really couldn’t have been worse; they will certainly be better in this game against an untested Angel starter, Davis Daniel.

Why the Angels could cover/win the spread

The Jays have been a bad team all year. They’ve never looked like a good team. They are the most disappointing team in the major leagues, by a long margin. The Angels can and will destroy them.
