The new trailer offers a fresh look at the show’s returning characters, including new PSNI recruits Grace (Siân Brooke), Annie (Katherine Devlin) and Tommy (Nathan Braniff), as well as Stevie (Martin McCann), Helen (Joanne Crawford) and Sandra (Andi Osho).

Fans will also get a glimpse of the new characters in season two, including new Constable Shane (Frank Blake) and siblings Lee (Seamus O’Hara) and Mags (Seána Kerslake).

The new episodes follow Grace, Annie and Tommy one year after the events of the last season. The police officers are confronted with a gang feud that culminates in a “violent and devastating confrontation”.

“The tension is high,” says Helen in the trailer. “We’re monitoring an area that could explode at any moment, and we’re flying completely blind.”

Blue Lights also further explores the developing relationship between Grace and Stevie. In the trailer, Grace is seen telling her colleague, “I don’t need anyone to protect me. I’ve never needed that.”

Also briefly seen in the trailer is Casualty legend Derek Thompson, whose character is interrogated by the police – quite different from his popular role as Charlie Fairhead.

It was announced that the actor will return to his hometown of Belfast and guest star as retired police officer Robin in the second season, after recently leaving the medical drama.

There’s a lot of good news for fans of Blue Lights, as last month it was announced that the drama will return for a third and fourth season, with the police recruits’ story just beginning.

The second series of Blue Lights will premiere on BBC One on Monday 15 April at 9pm. All six episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am the same day.
