BOSTON – Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen will make Major League Baseball history on Monday when he faces his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jansen will be the first player in baseball history to play for both teams in one game. Boston manager Alex Cora announced Friday that Jansen will be at the plate for the Red Sox on Monday when the Sox and Blue Jays finish a day of play at Fenway Park.

Game between Red Sox and Blue Jays interrupted

The Red Sox and Blue Jays began play at Fenway Park on June 26. Jansen, batting seventh for Toronto, was at bat when the game was postponed due to rain. The game was eventually suspended and rescheduled for Monday as part of a doubleheader.

And that’s where things got interesting. Before the MLB transfer deadline, Jansen was traded to Boston in exchange for three young players.

When play resumes on Monday, the Blue Jays will be forced to use a pinch hitter in Jansen’s place.

Boston’s game-day lineup included Reese McGuire, who was designated for assignment and later transferred to Triple-A Worcester.

For this reason, Jansen will be on the Red Sox roster on Monday.

Jansen told The Athletic it was a “unique thing” and “it’s going to be crazy.”

Who is Danny Jansen?

Jansen played 61 games for the Blue Jays this season before being traded. The catcher spent seven seasons in Toronto before the trade.

With Boston, Jansen has a batting average of .257 with two home runs and five runs batted in in 13 games.
