Bowen Yang says SNL host made cast cry because he hated sketch ideas

Without naming names, “Saturday Night Live” favorite Bowen Yang revealed that a male host once “made several cast members cry” during a read-through for the sketch comedy series because he didn’t like the ideas being discussed for his episode. Yang joined “SNL” in September 2018.

“This man, this person, this host, made several cast members cry before the read-through on Wednesday because he hated the ideas,” Yang said when asked on “Watch What Happens Live” about the worst behavior he’d ever experienced from an “SNL” host. He later called the experience “horrific.”

Yang was also asked during the interview about his biggest flop in terms of “SNL” sketches and he recalled a sketch that was planned for host Ayo Edebiri in the final season.

“We wrote a live sketch that took place in an elevator, and she and I told everyone that we should all make out or something because the elevator was stuck,” Yang explained. “Then for some reason it turned into a pre-tape right under our noses, and we had to adapt to that… It just didn’t go as well as I had hoped.”

Yang added: “And you just deal with it. Comedy is subjective, you never know how it will be received by a certain audience. But that’s OK, you let it roll off you.”

Since joining SNL, Yang has received four Emmy nominations. Three of the nominations were for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. This year, he is nominated again in that category.
