On Friday, Brazil experienced the worst plane crash involving a Brazilian airline since 2007. An ATR-72 aircraft carrying 58 passengers and four crew members went into a spin and crashed in the city of Vinhedo in the state of São Paulo, shortly before the plane was due to reach São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil’s busiest airport.
Several agencies are investigating the crash, including the Air Force, police authorities, and federal and state prosecutors. French and Canadian technicians are involved in the investigation, as the aircraft is of French origin and the engines were manufactured in Canada.
In light of this tragedy and its consequences, the Supreme Court may change the current system for investigating plane crashes. The judges have scheduled a hearing on August 13 in a legal case that raises questions about how these investigations are conducted in Brazil and how information is shared with the public.
