FCT, Abuja – President Bola Tinubu has ordered a reduction in the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the upcoming sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
This directive was announced by Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Saturday evening, August 17, in Abuja during a one-day retreat organized by the State Administration for the heads of government agencies under its control.
Tinubu advocates reducing governance costs
Addressing the retreat, the CoS said the decision to streamline Nigeria’s delegation to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September was part of the government’s commitment to ensure prudent management of resources and reduce the cost of governance.

Gbajabiamila said:
“I just spoke with the President this afternoon. In the next few weeks we will see a test of this policy during the UN General Assembly in New York.
“Recent protests have been about cutting government costs. Everyone is waiting to see if Nigeria will send the ‘largest delegation’ to UNGA as it has done in the past.”
“We know from experience that some people use the opportunity of such international meetings to pursue their personal business.
“I have received instructions from the President that we will be strict this time. If you have no business in the UN General Assembly, do not enter America. This is an instruction from the President.”
International events: Previous criticism of Tinubu
Legit.ng recalls that Tinubu faced enormous backlash in 2023 over the large number of Nigerian delegations at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The German government responded that the representation of over 1,400 Nigerians was very much in line with “our status as Africa’s leading sovereign voice and actor on climate action.”
