Burglary suspect arrested after barricading himself in Murray hotel room

MURRAY — Police arrested a burglary suspect who allegedly barricaded himself in a hotel room, prompting the special operations squad to be called on Wednesday afternoon.

Sergeant Aymee Race of the Unified Police Department said police were called to a car break-in in Holladay around 6 a.m. Race said surveillance footage showed the suspect breaking into the vehicle while armed and fleeing the scene.

She said police were able to track the suspect to the Residence Inn at 171 E. 5300 South using GPS technology. Murray police arrived at the hotel and attempted to contact the suspect, but learned that a gun and “other materials” made arrest difficult, Race said.

“The officers did push the door open, but at that point they realized they may have barricaded themselves in the hotel room,” Race said.

Due to the weapons and barricade situation, Murray Police requested the SWAT and Unified Police team to take over the operation.

Race said the SWAT team was able to enter the hotel room and arrest two people. The two confirmed to police that the burglary suspect was still in the hotel room. Another person left the room and the suspect was arrested shortly afterward.

Police are questioning the suspect and UPD said it will release more details about the suspect after gathering more information.
