California woman who beat her child on flight to Seattle sentenced

A woman accused of hitting and shaking her child during a flight from Mexico to Seattle has pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to one year of federal supervision.

The U.S. District Court in Seattle sentenced Breanna Mistler, 33, of Davis, California, to time already served and one year of probation for assault. Mistler was arrested on May 1, 2024, when the plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

According to court documents, Mistler was observed abusing her child during the flight. At one point, the child woke her up, and she began hitting and shaking the two-year-old child “like a rag doll.”

Several passengers tried to intervene, but Mistler told them to “mind their own (expletive) business,” court documents say.

After her arrest in Sea-Tac, Mistler was held at the Federal Detention Center for about three weeks.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mistler will soon begin serving a prison sentence in California for arson. She is taking parenting and anger management classes and told a judge she was at “rock bottom” at the time of the attack. Mistler’s attorney said she is now “sober, thoughtful and remorseful and is currently having supervised visitation with her daughter.”

Mistler’s four-month prison sentence for arson begins in September, after which she will be placed under federal supervision by the Department of Probation, Child Protective Services and California probation officers.
