Car break-ins in city centre hotel overnight unsettle guests

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police are investigating a series of car break-ins at a downtown Louisville hotel.

It happened early Sunday morning. LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell said the original report of the break-ins came from the security guard at 4 a.m., but LMPD needed a victim present to take a report. Police returned to the scene around 6 a.m. to take reports.

According to LMPD, 16 cars were broken into overnight, their windows smashed and valuables scattered in the parking garage.

One of those victims is Tammy Bryant, who was staying at the hotel on a business trip from Nashville. Bryant works at a brewery and was in town for an event. She had a few items left over from the event in her company car.

“A few tables, ice buckets and things like that, but nothing was missing from our car,” Bryant said.

Other guests were different. One told WAVE News that his Apple AirPods were stolen from his car. He tracked their location from his phone to an area down the street before disappearing.

“Another family was not notified until they went down here and saw their car,” Bryant said. “They had cash, electronics, a special Kobe Bryant basketball from one of their sons. All of that was gone,”

Bryant and the other guests never expected this when they woke up, but together they get through it.

“This isn’t even our hometown, and these things happen in our hometown,” Bryant said. “But when it happens to you, it becomes personal, and that puts it at the forefront of your mind.”

Surveillance cameras were discovered in the garage stairwell, but it is unclear whether any of them were in the garage.

LMPD was unable to provide a dollar amount of the stolen items. LMPD is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the tip line.
