Cassandra Cain returns to the pages of a solo series just in time for her 25th anniversary

Just in time for her 25th anniversary, Cassandra Cain is returning to the pages of a solo title. Tate Brombal, best known for his work on House of Slaughter at Boom Studios, will handle writing duties. Brombal also has a DC Elseworlds title in the works, focusing on a new and different Green Lantern in Green Lantern Darkbut this title will be in the main continuity as it will be branded as part of DC’s All-In initiative. The art will be by Takeshi Miyazawa, whose work you may have seen on Ms. Marvel or Mech Cadet Yu. Miyazawa’s drawings are definitely heavily influenced by the manga, so it should be well suited to the action of one of the best fighters in the DCU. The recently announced Black Canary – The Best of the Best Tom King and Ryan Sook’s title has certainly led to some talk about who might be considered the best fight in the greater DC Universe, but that story is called Black Label, so the matter is far from settled and probably won’t appear in any of those titles in the long run. What they do have in common, however, is an antagonist who is certainly considered extremely formidable: Lady Shiva. It makes a lot of sense for Shiva to show up, given that she’s Cassandra Cain’s mother, but how prominent her role in the title will be is currently unclear. What is certain is that Cassandra Cain fans have something to look forward to in November when issue number one of that title hits comic shops. You can read DC’s full press release below.

Batgirl – DC, Tate Brombal and Takeshi Miyazawa expand DC All In with a new solo series starring Cassandra Cain!

Wednesday, November 6

Hold on tight, clutch your pearls, and celebrate, because on November 6, Cassandra Cain will be the focus of her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades, courtesy of writer Tate Brombal (Green Lantern Dark, House of Slaughter) and artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel, Mech Cadet Yu).

When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva must come to the rescue. They’re forced to put aside their complicated pasts and work together as mother and daughter to make sure they get out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as simple as they seem, and Batgirl must embark on a breathtaking, martial arts-filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice… and vengeance?! This is a Batgirl like no other, so don’t miss the opportunity to delve into the psyche of one of Gotham City’s deadliest fighters while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother.

“Cassandra Cain has long been my favorite Bat-family character, so it’s a huge honor to take on her story — and in her 25th anniversary year, no less,” Brombal said. “Get ready for family drama, long-hidden secrets coming to light, and plenty of martial arts smackdowns like only Cass can deliver. Batgirl is back under her own title, and the world won’t know what hit her.”

“I’m so excited to explore Cassandra Cain’s story with Tate,” added artist Miyazawa. “She’s a fascinating part of the Bat-family and I can’t wait to see all the twists and turns. I’m also honored to be drawing such a wonderful book as my first DC project!”

Batgirl #1 has a main cover by David Talaski, with various covers by Jeff Dekal, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau (cardboard and foil versions), and Skylar Patridge. Visit your local comic shop for availability and pre-orders.
