What color is Chappell Roan’s hair?

“In her brightest moments, (Roan’s) hair color is a bright red with orange undertones,” explains celebrity colorist and Moroccanoil global ambassador Matt Rez. This particular shade was particularly evident during her Feminineominon era, circa 2023. Today, however, Matrix celebrity colorist George Papanikolas describes her hair color as “burgundy” with darker tones. It’s a “deep, sultry shade that perfectly balances the richness of red with dark, wine-like undertones,” he explains. “The color is bold yet elegant, with a glossy finish that adds depth and shine.”

Who suits Chappell Roan’s hair color best?

The ideal shade of Chappell Roan red can vary depending on your skin tone and eye color. “I would say that people with pink or cool skin undertones and light eyes, like greenish-blue eyes, will find the brighter red and orange color most flattering,” explains Rez. “This hair color will really make those eyes pop.”

According to Papanikolas, Roan’s current shade of red suits everyone better. “It’s a bold shade that exudes confidence and combines the drama of a deep red with the subtle elegance of a burgundy,” he says. “This shade is versatile, flattering a range of skin tones and can be styled to look either edgy or sophisticated.”

If you choose the brighter red that they wear during their Casual Era, you may need to lighten some darkness to achieve the desired result. “I would lighten up to the orange-red with a bright permanent red hair color and finish off with a bright orange-red gloss to really take the vibrancy to the next level,” explains Rez.

And what about her current burgundy shade? “If you have dark, natural hair, use a permanent color like Matrix SoColor ($16) to lighten and lock in the color,” Papanikolas says. “If the hair is already colored, you’ll need to remove the previous color and then apply a semi-permanent color over it to achieve the burgundy finish. Naturally lighter hair needs color to lock in and can use a semi-permanent color to create the look.”

How to preserve your new red hair color

If you go red like Roan, you’ll need to actively work to maintain your new hair color. “Red tends to fade quickly, so avoid using water that’s too hot at home,” Papanikolas advises. “Also, hair should have even porosity so that the red tones can adhere evenly to the hair. Using a build-a-bond mask like the Matrix Instacure Instant Liquid Revival Mask ($30) strengthens hair from within and nourishes it deeply without weighing it down.”

You can also extend the life of your red color with a good hair mask. “I recommend using a color mask or an at-home transparent mask to keep the color vibrant and reflective,” says Rex. “Moroccanoil’s color masks ($30) are great because they’re a perfect combination of color refresh and conditioning in one.” Shop their favorites ahead.
