Chasing the Moon: My Search for the Omega x Swatch MISSION TO THE SUPER BLUE MOON PHASE

The allure of the Omega x Swatch Super Blue Moonphase watch mission drew me from Dallas to Austin, a journey sparked by the promise of a rare astronomical event. A fascinating phenomenon that combines a supermoon and a blue moon, the Super Blue Moon graces our skies only once every 10 to 20 years. This rarity naturally inspired this limited edition watch that Swatch and Omega have designed to celebrate the celestial event and their history-making collaboration.

Designer: Omega x Swatch

I chose to fly instead of the three-hour drive and landed in Austin determined and excited, with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The drive to the Swatch store was filled with anticipation as I navigated the city, knowing that this unique watch was only waiting for a select few. Upon arrival, I joined a group of like-minded individuals, all driven by the desire to own this beautifully crafted timepiece.

Swatch made the strategic decision to start the sale at 5pm, a time that coincided with the symbolism of the moonrise and gave the event a thematic dimension. This timing was ideal as it allowed collectors to meet after work and turn an ordinary evening into a memorable occasion.

The Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase was available in select Swatch stores across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Houston and Austin. These stores, all a destination for collectors, were carefully chosen to reflect the brand’s reach and commitment to access to its limited edition pieces.

As I joined the queue sixth, the camaraderie among collectors was palpable. Conversations about past releases, the rarity of the Super Blue Moon, and the watch’s technical features filled the air, creating a sense of community among strangers united by a shared passion.

MISSION TO THE MOON PHASE – FULL MOON vs. MISSION TO THE SUPER BLUE MOON PHASE

Swatch staff skillfully managed the crowd, handing out water to keep spirits high despite the oppressive heat, and confirmed rumors that stock was limited—only a handful of watches would be available at each location. This news increased anticipation, as everyone in line knew what was at stake.

Finally, the moment had arrived. The doors opened and we were led into the store one by one. Our eyes immediately fell on the centerpiece of the event: the Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase. The watch was displayed under carefully placed lighting that accentuated its striking design. Inside, the air conditioning provided relief from the oppressive heat outside, transforming the store into a haven for the watch lovers who had endured the long wait.

The blue bioceramic case shimmered and the panda dial – decorated with blue and silver opaline – drew attention with its intricate details. The moon phase indicator at the 2 o’clock position beautifully captured the essence of the super blue moon, rotating to display different phases. At the same time, the hidden details popped out under UV light, revealing an additional level of sophistication. This feature, as well as the pulsometer scale – traditionally used to measure heart rate – added aesthetic and functional appeal to the watch.

With its light blue stitching, the Velcro strap matched the bioceramic case perfectly, creating a unified and stylish look. However, as I’ve experienced with other models, the strap’s design had drawbacks. Although visually appealing, the Velcro strap lacked a locking mechanism, which could be risky for people with active lifestyles. My business partner even lost his Tiffany Dial MoonSwatch this way – a cautionary tale for potential buyers.

When I held the watch in my hands, it felt like a triumph. The cool touch of the bioceramic on my wrist was a stark contrast to the heat of the day, but the satisfaction of receiving this rare piece made every moment worthwhile. Every glance at the dial now reminds me of the excitement and dedication that marked that day.

For anyone considering this purchase, there are just ten days left before the opportunity to purchase the Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase directly from Swatch disappears. After August 19, only the aftermarket remains, where prices are already above the MSRP of $310. The watch is a tangible link to the rare event that inspired its creation, embodying the beauty and wonder of a unique celestial event.
