Chicago Cubs Minor League Summary: August 21

Iowa Boys

The Iowa Cubs fell to the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) 3-2.

Caleb Kilian made another rehab start and allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings. Kilian managed one walk and struck out four times.

Frankie Scalzo Jr. allowed a solo home run by Akil Baddoo in the seventh inning and lost. Scalzo’s final result was one run on three hits in 1.2 innings. He struck out once and walked no one.

Midfielder James Triantos was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

Shortstop Miles Mastrobuoni went 2 for 4 with a walk.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins) 10-6.

Antonio Santos started and got the win despite allowing two solo home runs in the second inning. Santos finished five innings and was charged with three runs on seven hits. He allowed two walks and struck out six strikeouts.

Second Baseman Reivaj Garcia had his best game in Double-A tonight, going 4 for 4 with a double. He scored twice and struck out one.

Left fielder Christian Franklin was 3 for 5 with a double. Franklin scored three runs and scored one himself.

Midfielder Brett Bateman was 2 for 5 with a stolen base. He scored two runs and had a two-run single as part of a six-run fourth inning for the Smokies.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were beaten by the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins) 6-2.

Drew Gray pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He allowed two walks and had three strikeouts.

Luis Devers pitched the next two innings, allowing one run on two hits and losing. He managed two walks and a strikeout.

South Bend had only two hits tonight, but one of them was a two-run double by the right fielder Andy Garriola in the sixth inning. Garriola was 1 for 4.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) 8-6.

starter Tyler Sleeper allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings. He struck out five times and walked once.

Luis Rujano took over for Schlaffer and got knocked down, but still got the win as the Pelicans offense came storming back. Rujano pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He allowed two walks and struck out two.

Vince Reilly was called in with one man on base and one out in the ninth inning to make the save. Reilly allowed a single but prevented the RiverDogs from scoring any more runs. Reilly managed a strikeout.

In the first inning, second baseman Jose Escobar hit a two-run home run. It was Escobar’s first home run as a Pelican and his fourth overall. Escobar was 1 for 3 with a walk.

In the second inning, left fielder Leonel Espinoza hit a solo home run, his fourth of the year. Espinoza went 1 for 4 and was the first batter of the game to be hit by a pitch.

Yesterday, third baseman Daniela Schmidt hit his first professional home run. Tonight, Smith hit his second professional home run in the eighth inning with the bases empty. Smith went 2 for 4 with a walk and two runs batted in.

Escobar goes deep. Really deep.

Espinoza’s home run went just over the fence, but still counts.
