Chicago Cubs Minor League Summary: August 22

The Cubs promoted right-handers Nick Hull from High-A South Bend to Double-A Tennessee.

The Cubs also released a right-handed pitcher Josh Staumont.

IowaCubs

The Iowa Cubs beat the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) 5-3 in 11 innings.

Great start tonight for Brandon Birdsell, who had nine strikeouts in six scoreless innings. Birdsell allowed four hits and no walks.

Trey Wingenter pitched in the bottom of the tenth inning and couldn’t stop the automatic runner from scoring, blowing the save. But he got the win when Iowa scored three runs in the top of the eleventh inning. Wingenter’s final line was an unearned run on two hits in one inning. He struck out three players and allowed no walks.

Eduardo Nunez pitched the bottom of the 11th inning and earned his first Triple-A save. Nunez allowed one run on one hit in one inning. Nunez struck out once and didn’t walk anyone.

Third Baseman Matt Shaw was responsible for Iowa’s only run in the first nine innings when he hit his third Iowa home run. It was his 17th home run overall. Shaw went 2 for 4 with two walks.

Shortstop Luis Vazquez went 2 for 5 with an RBI single in the eleventh inning. He later scored with a Chase Stocking RBI single. Stocking went 1 for 4 with a walk.

Second Baseman James Triantos went 3-for-5 with an RBI single in the tenth inning.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins) 7-3.

Chris Kachmar and earned the win with five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Kachmar walked two and had three strikeouts.

Shortstop Fabian Pertuz hit a solo home run in the eighth inning. It was his second with Tennessee and his fourth overall. Pertuz was 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. He also stole a base.

DH Jonathon Long was 2 for 4. He hit twice and scored one goal.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins) 3-1.

starter Will Sanders He threw 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, two of them earned. Sanders struck out five times and walked once.

In the first inning, right fielder Andy Garriola hit a solo home run, his third for South Bend and his 21st overall. Garriola was 1 for 4.

Third Baseman Edgar Alvarez went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) 6-2.

Juan Bello pitched the first five innings and earned the win after allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out four players and did not allow a walk.

Angel Hernandez threw the final 1.1 innings for the save. Hernandez retired all four batters he faced, striking out two of them.

For the third time in a row, Third Baseman Daniela Schmidt hit a home run. This came in the third inning when there was still one man on base. Smith had the first three-hit game of his career, going 3 of 4. He scored twice.

Second Baseman Jose Escobar hit a three-run double in the first inning. Escobar was 1 for 4.
