Children stock up for class at the back-to-school event in Reading | Reading Area

READING, Pa. — Reading children are getting energized for another school year as summer comes to a close. The city of Reading supported them with a free gift Friday.

“This is our third annual back-to-school information fair,” said Manny Guzman, Pennsylvania State Representative for the 127th District.

Mayor Eddie Moran and State Rep. Manny Guzman hosted the Back-to-School Resource Fair on Friday.

“We wanted to make sure we gave all of our children in the Reading School District and surrounding areas the opportunity to get a head start on this school year,” Guzman said.

The event in the 600th block of Penn Street brought together many organizations,

“There are about 25 different stalls,” says Reading Mayor Eddie Moran. “Everyone from colleges to banks to harvest workers are represented here, and they also offer fresh produce. We have a lot of different resources to make sure everyone is ready for the year ahead.”

The children were able to choose from tables filled with necessities such as backpacks, pencils, notebooks and more, including a brand new haircut – for free.

“I like it, it’s a nice activity for the family and for the people of Reading,” says Miriam Massol, a resident of Reading.

Even a little help can make a big difference.

“It’s great that the children can go to school well equipped, and it’s nice that they are helping us in the current somewhat tense economic situation,” says Massol.

On August 26, children in the Reading school district will return to school.
