The Cincinnati Reds (62-65) overcame a 0-6 deficit on Wednesday night and beat the Toronto Blue Jays (59-68) 11-7 to win the series.
Here are our findings after the game:
Blue Jays reach Martinez
Nick Martinez was the Reds’ best pitcher, but the Blue Jays used him early and often on Wednesday night. The right-hander lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
The Rally Reds
The Reds fought back from a six-run deficit. Spencer Steer put the Reds on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a two-run home to left field.
In the fifth inning, Jonathan India got within three with an RBI single before Elly De La Cruz cut the deficit to 6-5 with a two-run single. Tyler Stephenson brought De La Cruz home with an RBI groundout to tie the game before Santiago Espinal worked a walk with the bases loaded to give the Reds a 7-6 lead.
In the sixth inning, Noelvi Marte and India hit back-to-back home runs to give the Reds a 9-6 lead. Stephenson hit an RBI double later in the inning that scored De La Cruz and gave the Reds a four-run lead.
De La Cruz added an add-on in the eighth inning with his 22nd home run of the season.
Bullpen closes the door
Tony Santillan came in as a replacement for Martinez in the fifth inning and rescued the Reds from a tricky situation with the bases full and in the lead.
In the sixth inning, the first two batters against Buck Farmer achieved a strikeout and a double play to end the inning.
Sam Moll allowed a double and walked a batter in the seventh inning, but Emilio Pagan came in as a reliever and kept both runners on the bench. Pagan also added a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Fernando Cruz allowed one run in the ninth, but was able to keep the damage to a minimum.
The Reds bullpen allowed just one run in 4 2/3 innings.
