City north of Phoenix metropolitan area loses power after suspected drunk driver crashes into pole

PHOENIX — A suspected drunk driver crashed into a power pole Tuesday night, leaving an entire city north of the Phoenix metropolitan area without power for two hours, authorities said.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), officers responded to Coldwater Road in Black Canyon City around 8:30 p.m. after several residents reported hearing an accident and experiencing a power outage.

They learned that a man in his late 50s, whose name was not released, had crushed two mailboxes, a street sign and an Arizona Public Service (APS) pole before ending up in a ditch, the YCSO said.

What happened after the suspected drunk driver hit a pole?

As a result, all of Black Canyon City was without power. APS restored power around 10:30 p.m.

The utility company told YCSO that the accident caused approximately $10,000 in damage.

The driver, who officers suspected was under the influence of alcohol, was taken to a hospital in north Phoenix for treatment of his injuries.

YCSO plans to forward DUI and criminal damage charges to the District Attorney’s Office.

Black Canyon City is located about 50 miles north of downtown Phoenix on Interstate 17.
