A beautiful house reef, inviting waters, a soothing spa and sophisticated island-style design make Coco Bodu Hithi a modern Maldives experience.
Location
The resort is located in North Male Atoll, which is about a 30-40 minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport in the Maldivian capital of Male. Transfers can be booked as part of your stay. The island is located on a house reef and offers access to fantastic diving and snorkeling spots. Try to go at night when you have the best chance of seeing (thankfully harmless) nurse sharks.
The mood
Coco Bodu Hithi exudes easy, relaxed luxury with a touch of Art Deco – the ‘beach club’ aesthetic fits the surroundings beautifully. Even in high season there is a sense of privacy; even the main pool, which is naturally the busiest, never feels too crowded and excursions are only undertaken in small groups – these include snorkelling trips, fishing trips and sunset cruises.

Bed and bath
There are two types of villas at the resort: 44 island villas and 68 overwater villas of varying sizes. The Coco Residences are the largest at 184 square metres and are located in a separate wing of the island. Inside, there are high ceilings and large picture windows (overlooking the beautiful blue Indian Ocean), complemented by a large king-size four-poster bed (with a choice of pillows, of course). Outside, on your private split-level sundeck, you’ll find loungers and a four-poster bed, an infinity pool and direct access to the lagoon and reef. Pay attention to which direction the deck faces if you want to spend more time in the sun.
Food and Drink
There are seven bars and restaurants at Coco Bodu Hithi. Air, the main dining room, is part of the all-inclusive package and offers an extensive international buffet ranging from traditional Maldivian cuisine to Middle Eastern and British fare. Whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, the standard was excellent.
The evening barbecue at Wave Beach is an extra charge but delicious. You start with platters of bread and sushi before choosing a main course which is then cooked fresh over the flames. The lobster is some of the best I’ve ever eaten.
The ambience of Aqua’s fine dining restaurant was immaculate, with waves crashing onto the shore; however, despite the promises, it failed to hold its own against the other restaurants. Tsuki, which serves Japanese cuisine, is ideal for those who like to pair wine with fresh fish; spicy tuna with wasabi caviar is highly recommended.
Each room offers a wide selection of cocktails (and mocktails) that are easy to get down during a stay here; however, the cost of drinks can add up quickly, so drinkers should opt for the all-inclusive package.
Facilities
There are plenty of places to relax all over the island, including several beaches and the main pool. For those who prefer something more active, there is an air-conditioned, well-equipped gym next to the spa (with sea views) and sunrise and sunset yoga classes. The dive center offers water sports and equipment rental.
There is a small shop which is expensive (I paid $50/£38.50 for a low quality pair of flip-flops) and a jewellery shop.
The spa offers a wide range of treatments including milk baths, massages and facials in its eight treatment rooms. During the stay, it was disappointing to find the hot tub, cold plunge pool, sauna and steam room were closed for works.
