Colorado Rockies talent rankings, 2024 midseason: Top 30 summary

After the unveiling of the Purple Row community Colorado Rockies List of top prospects in the last few weeksSit’s time to show the whole list at once with some voting statistics. To wrap up the series tomorrow, I’ll also offer some thoughts on the state of the system as a whole.

And without further ado, here is the full list of the 2024 midseason top 30 PuRPs, including some voting stats:

This time, 2023 first-round pick pitcher Chase Dollander (16 of 35 first-place votes) beat out 2024 first-round pick outfielder/third baseman Charlie Condon (14 of 35 first-place votes, including mine). Preseason No. 1 pick PuRP Adael Amador received two first-place votes to finish third. Also receiving at least one first-place vote were outfielders Zac Veen and Yanquiel Fernandez, rounding out the top five.

As a reminder, a vote for first place was worth 30 points, second was worth 29 points, and so on. Until a player was named on 12 ballots, their vote totals were adjusted on a sliding scale to avoid any single ballot having too much influence on the community prediction. In this edition of the list, this rule was applied to PuRP 29, Warming Bernabel. There were no ties in the top 30, although ties for players who were not in the top 30 were broken according to voting rules. Voting concluded in early August and since then, no player who received votes has left the system, although some PuRPs have nearly exhausted their rookie eligibility.

For more information on the voting results for players who did not quite make it into the top 30, see the Introductory article to this edition of the PuRPs listtwo articles about multi-ballot players (Part I and Part II) and the Reviews of PuRPs Honorable Mention.

A few more comments:

  • The top 19 players were listed on at least 34 of the 35 ballots – 15 were named on each ballot. In addition, the entire top 21 were listed on at least 30 of the 35 ballots and the top 26 PuRPs were listed on more than half of the rankings.
  • A record-breaking 72 players received at least one vote for this PuRPs list (compared to 57 last time), 58 were mentioned on multiple ballots (compared to 42), while 31 were mentioned on at least 12 ballots (and therefore remained unchanged). Here is a link to the survey thread.
  • In this edition of the PuRPs list there were eight new names compared to the 2024 preseason list. Four of them – Condon (2), Brody Brecht (11), Jared Thomas (20) and Cole Messina (28) – were signed in the draft, while Ashly Andujar (24) was an international free agent this year, Greg Jones (26) was signed in a trade and both Kyle Karros (14) and Angel Chivilli (25) were already in the system.
  • Among those on the preseason list, the biggest movers were Carson Palmquist (up 8 spots), Ryan Ritter (up 6), Sean Sullivan (up 5), Robert Calaz (up 5) and Jack Mahoney (up 5). The biggest movers remaining on the list were Sterlin Thompson (down 12), Bernabel (down 12), Mason Albright (down 10), Dyan Jorge (down 9) and Benny Montgomery (down 8).
  • If you break down the list by position, there are 12 jugs (most of them are nominal starters, a few relievers; nine are right-handed, three are left-handed and only three are in the top ten), 2-5 corner infielders, 5-10 outfielders, 4-6 MidfieldersAnd 2-3 catchers — of course there is a certain degree of positional flexibility here.

In my final post tomorrow I will say more about the overall system!
