Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite reported on the progress of the Embassy Suites hotel and convention center project at Landers Center during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

“Of all the developments currently underway, this will be the most impactful and consequential for the future of Desoto County,” Musselwhite said.

When completed, the project will combine Mississippi’s only convention center with an on-site hotel. Musselwhite added that the land purchase should close in October, meaning construction should begin soon after and be in full swing by spring.

Musselwhite also announced that the Getwell Road widening project will be completed in about five weeks. Turn lanes and turn signals have been added in all directions. Milling should be completed by the end of this week, followed by paving and striping.

The city plans to honor former councilwoman and founder of the House of Grace women’s shelter Lorine Cady as the newest name in the Southaven Tribute Hall, with a ceremony planned for 5:15 p.m. before the second board meeting in September or the first meeting in October, depending on her schedule.

Cady served on the City Council for seven four-year terms and then founded the Women’s Shelter, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2023. Her work on the City Council helped prevent Southaven from incorporating with Horn Lake, which ultimately led to the city being incorporated as a city in 1980.
