Consumption banned after break-in at Kelowna reservoir

The break-in was discovered by a citizen on August 19.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of Kelowna are investigating a break-in at the Grainger Road Reservoir that resulted in a water consumption ban.

The city issued the notice to residents in the Clifton Road area after the break-in was discovered by a citizen on August 19.

“There is currently no physical evidence that our water system has been contaminated and the reservoir has been isolated by operators,” said Andy Weremy, water plant operations manager.

Water can still be used for basic outdoor hygiene and irrigation purposes (flushing toilets, watering, washing clothes, bathing, showering, washing food, etc.).

“But at this time, tap water should not be consumed until test results indicate full compliance with water quality,” says a press release from the City of Kelowna. “Water cannot be made nontoxic by boiling.”

Weremy said test results should be available on Wednesday, August 21.

The announcement affects around 1,500 households and will remain in effect until further notice.

Further information can be found on the city’s website.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and reference case number 2024-47894.

Individuals wishing to remain anonymous may contact Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip at crimestoppers.net.
