Crypto.com Arena upgrades large, center-mounted scoreboard for games, concerts and other special events with stunning display from Daktronics

BROOKINGS, SD, August 14, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, has been selected by Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to manufacture and install a new center-hung scoreboard: a 5,500-square-foot, six-display, 41.7 million pixel configuration that will hang above the action during Los Angeles Lakers, LA Kings and Los Angeles Sparks games, as well as concerts and countless other live events at the legendary Southern California facility.

Installation began on August 1st with a crew of over 60 workers from various construction and consulting firms, as well as construction personnel. The team worked around the clock to meet the August 14th deadline, while also fitting in the arena’s busy schedule to accommodate two high-profile concert dates.

The new scoreboard will be used at concerts, live events and when teams are on the field and ice beginning in mid- to late August. The enhanced scoreboard will also enrich the digital experience, including headboard and band displays provided by Daktronics in 2022.

“We are excited to unveil a new, state-of-the-art scoreboard with crisp, clear graphics and imagery for our fans to enjoy at Lakers, Kings and LA Sparks games, as well as other live events at Crypto.com Arena,” said Lee Zeidman, President of Crypto.com Arena, Peacock Theater and LA LIVE. “As the arena celebrates its 25th anniversary,th anniversary in 2024. Working with Daktronics to present this spectacular centerpiece that brings our guests even closer to the action complements the many additional upgrades and technological advancements at this historic venue.”

Details of the centrally mounted scoreboard

The main video display is a continuous screen that wraps around the center-hung structure and has a pixel pitch of 3.9 millimeters. It is approximately 27 feet tall and has a circumference of 170.5 feet. It can divide content into different zones, allowing it to display multiple zones of digital content as needed for each event. This includes live video feeds, instant replays, stats and game information, graphics and animations, and sponsor messages.

“Crypto.com Arena is the premier venue in Los Angeles and we are excited to deliver an even better experience with the LED technology we installed this year,” said Reece Kurtenbach, President and CEO of Daktronics. “This project reflects our commitment to innovation and quality while showcasing our vision for the future of technology and its role in supporting live events. We are thrilled to bring this installation to life as it delivers a new level of entertainment for fans.”

A unique lower display is located beneath the main display on the centrally suspended structure facing the ground below. It is 5.5 meters high and 5.5 meters wide and has a pixel pitch of 2.5 millimeters. This allows for additional graphics and animations as well as the unique opportunity for additional content during events.

Four underfloor displays are mounted on each side of the lower display and face the sides and ends of the arena. Each of these displays is just under 4.3 meters high and 5 meters wide and has a pixel pitch of 2.5 millimeters. They can show additional content to the main display while also engaging spectators seated closer to the floor.

The new center-hung scoreboard will be connected to the previously installed end wall and ribbon displays by a custom Daktronics control system using Show Control with Camino and Venus Control Suite. This industry-leading control system offers a combination of display control software, best-in-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that creates a powerful yet easy-to-use production solution. The addition of Camino to the control system provides a new level of functionality for creating dynamic, real-time rendered content not previously possible in a Daktronics system.
