Cubs squad changes: Daniel Palencia recalled, Jack Neely optional

One roster change has been announced, another is coming!

Jack Neely was acquired from the Yankees in exchange for Mark Leiter Jr. He made his MLB debut last week against the Tigers and got hit hard. He had a few good outings after that, then got hit hard again by the Pirates last night.

For this reason, the Cubs wanted a fresh pitcher for the remainder of this trip.

Daniel Palencia has a 6.55 ERA with 12 strikeouts and eight walks in seven games (11 innings) for the Cubs this year. Those appearances all came in April and early May, after which he was placed on the IL with a strained right shoulder. He was sent to Triple-A Iowa for rehab and then placed on optional treatment.

This year in Iowa, Palencia has a 5.46 ERA and a 1.404 WHIP in 27 games (one start). In 31 innings, he has 54 strikeouts and 19 walks.

Palencia showed talent in his appearances for the Cubs last year and he throws really hard. His inability to throw strikes consistently has kept him out of the MLB bullpen. Hopefully he can show enough in this appearance to be in the bullpen next year. Neely has talent too and will certainly be there in 2025.

Again, today’s game preview will be released at 3:30 p.m. CT.
