Danny Jansen made bizarre MLB history by playing for the Red Sox and the Blue Jays in the same game

They say you can’t be in two places at once. Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen disagrees.

Jansen made MLB history on Monday by playing for both teams in the second inning of the Red Sox’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. Here’s how and when he did it.

Jansen was a member of the Blue Jays when they faced the Red Sox on July 26. The game began in the second inning with one on and one out, and Jansen at bat with the score 0-1. However, the game was suspended due to rain and postponed until a doubleheader between the two clubs on August 26.

A day later, on July 27, Jansen was traded to the Red Sox in exchange for three junior players before the MLB transfer deadline, meaning he was no longer a member of the Blue Jays. Red Sox manager Alex Cora had scheduled Jansen to start at catcher when play resumed. However, Jansen was technically still at bat for the Blue Jays, so when play resumed on Monday, Toronto sent in Daulton Varsho as a pinch hitter for Jansen, who was behind bat for Boston.

Here is the exact historic moment.

Varsho served as a pinch hitter for Jansen, while Jansen filled in for former Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire behind the plate as a defensive replacement.

Unfortunately, Jansen’s historic moment did not go entirely smoothly, as he promptly allowed a stolen base with the score at 0 and 2.

Give the guy a chance, it’s hard to field and hit at the same time! Both the Red Sox and Blue Jays had fun on social media about Jansen’s historic moment.

Things got even stranger when Jansen came to bat for the Red Sox in the second half of the inning.

Wait, wasn’t he just at bat?

You really never know what you’re going to see at a baseball game.
