Delhi-based comic rock band Kapow brings their electric energy to Hyderabad to pay tribute to Queen

When bassist Saira Ahmed talks about her originals, she says, “No genre is off limits for us. Mayank grew up listening to Kishore Kumar, we listen to indie, so it all comes together. Nothing is off limits.”

The band, formed in 2019 by a group of passionate fresh-out-of-college people, will be performing in Hyderabad for the third time. Mayank, Prakhar, Saira, Vinod Arora (guitarist) and Ritic Joel Victoria (keyboardist), all from very different family backgrounds, united by their passion for music. They say that off stage, they work just like a corporate company: scheduling meetings, making excel sheets, planning budgets, etc. India’s first comic rock band, Mayank explains what comic rock is, “On the surface, it’s easily digestible, entertaining and has a quirky vibe. But as songwriters, we address issues and tell meaningful stories but package them in a very entertaining and quirky way. We want to appeal to all audiences. If we make it too deep and slow, we lose the audience who just want to have fun. At some point, when they feel like it, they will understand the lyrics and the whole song will feel completely different.”

As an example, Kapow cites her recent song Scooby Doo Jackie Chan, which deals with mental health, but with a peculiar twist. Her upcoming song Kali Billi deals with superstition, also with a peculiar twist. Prakhar says, “The only pattern is that we break songwriting rules with every song we make.”

Tickets for 499 INR. August 24, 9pm. At Hard Rock Cafe, Hitech City.
