A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing in New York after reports emerged that some in-flight meals had been spoiled.
The 277 passengers on board Delta Flight 136, en route from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport to Amsterdam on Tuesday evening, were diverted to John F. Kennedy International Airport after some of the in-flight meals in the main cabin were discovered to be spoiled.
After reports of spoiled food emerged, Delta consulted medical experts who recommended diverting the flight to New York.
It is not known how many people ate the tainted food, but paramedics were met when the plane landed in New York at about 4 a.m. Wednesday morning and 12 passengers were examined but refused medical attention or transport to the hospital, the New York Fire Department told USA TODAY.
“This is not the service Delta is known for”
In a statement to USA TODAY, Delta apologized for the emergency landing.
“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delays to their travels,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.
Delta’s food safety team is working to “immediately isolate” the product and initiate an investigation into the incident.
