DeMarlo Hale of the Blue Jays is reportedly a name to keep an eye on in the White Sox manager search

Toronto Blue Jays associate manager DeMarlo Hale is a name to keep an eye on in the Chicago White Sox’s managerial search, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported Saturday.

Hale, who has served on a handful of major league coaching staffs over the past two decades, was born and raised in Chicago. The 63-year-old was a minor league infielder in the 1980s.

After being named Minor League Manager of the Year in 1999, Hale joined the Texas Rangers and served as their major league first base coach until 2005. Hale then moved to the Boston Red Sox, where he became first base coach from 2006 to 2011 and eventually bench coach under manager Terry Francona.

Hale served as third base coach for the Baltimore Orioles for one season in 2012 and then served as bench coach for the Blue Jays from 2013 to 2018. He spent two years in the Atlanta Braves system before returning to Francona in Cleveland and taking over as bench coach for the Guardians.

When Francona retired last fall, Hale decided to return to the Blue Jays.

Hale has been considered for managerial jobs in the past but was never hired. However, he managed four games for Toronto in 2015 and 2016 and also stepped in as Cleveland’s active manager in 2021 when Francona had health issues.

The White Sox currently have an interim manager in Grady Sizemore, a former All-Star outfielder with Cleveland. He took over Thursday after Chicago fired Pedro Grifol.

After 118 games this season, the White Sox are 28-90, on pace to have the worst record of any MLB team since the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics.

According to Morosi, Hale joins a list of candidates that also includes Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker, New York Mets bench coach John Gibbons and Detroit Tigers pitching coach Chris Fetter. Hale worked under Gibbons in Toronto, where the two coached future White Sox general manager Chris Getz.
