Derek Chauvin, police officer who killed George Floyd, was transferred to prison

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer serving a lengthy prison sentence for the murder of George Floyd more than four years ago, was transferred from a federal prison in Arizona to a transfer facility in Oklahoma without a public explanation, according to government records.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons said Chauvin is currently being held at the Federal Administrative Security Transfer Center in Oklahoma City.

The agency has not yet disclosed the reason for the transfer of the 48-year-old inmate or whether a transfer to another federal institution is planned. The agency’s handbook for the facility describes it as a prison for inmates that includes “transitional holdovers and parole violators.”

However, Chauvin’s mother said in a social media post over the weekend that his time in Oklahoma City would be short-lived.

“Please do NOT send Derek any cards/mail, books, or lunch money at this time as he has been temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City,” Carolyn Pawlenty wrote. “I am not sure where he will be staying permanently. … Not knowing many details about my son has caused me great concern. … I cannot share many details yet, but will post them when I have them.”

John Turscak, 53, was charged in U.S. District Court with attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault causing great bodily harm in connection with the attack in the Tucson Jail’s law library.

The indictment states that Turscak told correctional officers that he had considered attacking Chauvin because the fired police officer was known for killing Floyd.
